Yemen Conflict Drives Surge of Refugees Into Djibouti, Raising Regional Humanitarian Strain

Yemen conflict has intensified, driving thousands of civilians to flee across the Red Sea into Djibouti, where UNHCR monitors the flow and warns that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly.

Djibouti border camps have expanded capacity to accommodate the influx, and aid agencies report that food, water and medical supplies are stretched thin as arrivals peak during the rainy season, prompting UN agencies to coordinate emergency logistics with the Djibouti government.

UN Refugee Agency chief addressed the Security Council, stating that 117 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide, and highlighted Yemen as one of the top three drivers of new refugee movements this year.

International data from the UN and IOM indicates 304 million migrants were recorded in 2024, a rise driven by conflict zones such as Yemen, Syria and the Sahel, underscoring the growing pressure on host nations.
