ARPA-H Launches SPECTRA Program to Transform Autism Diagnosis and Precision Care

ARPA-H announces the launch of the SPECTRA initiative, a new federal effort targeting autism research and clinical tools. The program is positioned as a national response to improve early detection and personalized treatment pathways for autistic individuals across the United States.

SPECTRA Program will fund multidisciplinary teams to develop biomarkers, imaging methods, and data‑driven models that can differentiate autism subtypes. Researchers are expected to collaborate with hospitals, universities, and community clinics to create scalable diagnostic kits that reduce reliance on lengthy behavioral assessments.

Autism Diagnosis could shift from subjective questionnaires to objective measurements within five years, according to program leaders. Early pilots aim to shorten diagnosis time from the current average of two years to under six months, potentially enabling earlier intervention and better long‑term outcomes.

Funding for SPECTRA includes an initial $200 million allocation, with additional grants planned for private‑sector partnerships. The budget aims to accelerate prototype development and support field trials in diverse populations, ensuring the tools are effective across socioeconomic and ethnic groups.
