India Advances Smart City Mission With Limited Project Completion and Net‑Zero Goals

Hyderabad leads with a 2026 smart city roadmap that targets net‑zero emissions, expands public transit, upgrades water and waste systems, and installs integrated IoT sensors powered by renewable energy, according to the Hyderabad Smart City Projects 2026 overview.

Smart City Mission shows that only 18 of the 100 flagship projects have reached completion, highlighting a slowdown despite the overall tally of more than 7,400 smaller‑scale initiatives finished across the country, including transport hubs and digital dashboards.

Government officials reported major progress in deploying 5G infrastructure within smart city zones, linking high‑speed connectivity to traffic management, energy monitoring, smart lighting and public safety services as part of the latest development push.

World Bank highlighted India’s critical opportunity to build resilient urban centers, urging faster project delivery, stronger financing, and coordinated urban planning to meet climate goals and improve livability through the expanding smart city framework.
