Delhi Air Quality Hits Hazardous 452 After Diwali Fireworks Prompting Health Alerts

Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index of 452, classified as hazardous, following extensive Diwali fireworks that filled the city with fine particulate matter, with PM2.5 concentrations reaching 250 micrograms per cubic meter.

Health officials issued emergency alerts urging people, especially children, the elderly and those with asthma, to remain indoors, keep windows closed, wear N95 masks, use air purifiers where possible, and activated the city’s emergency response plan.

Delhi Pollution Control Board noted the reading surpasses the national safe limit of 300 and is the highest post‑Diwali level in five years, attributing it to stagnant wind conditions.

Local hospitals saw more respiratory cases, schools delayed sessions, and transport advised limited travel, while officials plan mobile monitors and consider firecracker bans for future festivals.
