India Loses 300 Million Renewable Units in Q1 2026 Amid Transmission Bottlenecks

India Renewable Energy lost 300 million units in the first quarter of 2026 because transmission lines could not move power, according to Ember’s latest update. The shortfall represents a significant curtailment of solar and wind output.

Maharashtra is responding by moving farm electricity supply to solar sources, with the state power utility MSEDCL planning to add 16 gigawatts of solar capacity as part of its transition strategy, said chief executive Lokesh Chandra.

MSEDCL expects the 16‑GW solar addition to reduce reliance on conventional grid power for agricultural users, aiming to improve energy reliability for farms while supporting the state’s renewable goals.

Energy Analysts note that the transmission bottleneck highlighted by Ember underscores the need for grid upgrades across India to fully capture renewable generation and avoid further losses as states like Maharashtra expand solar capacity.
