India Sets 500 Gigawatts Solar Target As Generation Jumps 138 Percent

MNRE reported that India's solar power generation has risen 138 percent over the past four years, reflecting accelerated capacity additions and higher output across the country’s photovoltaic farms and contributing to a stronger renewable mix.

India is positioning solar to become the primary energy source, setting a national target of 500 gigawatts of installed solar capacity by 2030, according to a recent PV Magazine analysis and aims to reduce reliance on coal.

Transmission infrastructure gaps are emerging as a constraint on the rapid expansion, with grid bottlenecks reported to delay new solar projects and limit the ability to move generated power to demand centers.

Renewable energy sector analysts note that the solar market posted record growth in the first quarter of 2026, driven by large‑scale installations and supportive policies, reinforcing India's momentum toward a low‑carbon future.
