AIIMS Partners With ISRO To Develop Space Medicine For Indian Lunar Astronauts

AIIMS joins ISRO in a joint effort to create medical support systems for Indian astronauts slated for a Moon mission, marking the first Indian institute of medical sciences to work on space health and to study the impact of reduced gravity on cardiovascular function.

ISRO will integrate AIIMS‑developed protocols into its crewed lunar program, seeking to monitor and mitigate physiological effects of long‑duration spaceflight, including bone density loss and radiation exposure, and develop telemedicine solutions for real‑time monitoring.

The partnership brings together AIIMS’s clinical research expertise and ISRO’s aerospace engineering, aiming to produce guidelines, drug regimens, and diagnostic tools that can be used both in orbit and on the lunar surface, and to train astronaut medical officers.

Experts say the initiative could also benefit remote health care on Earth, as technologies tested for space may improve treatment for patients in isolated regions across India, and could spur new biotech startups focused on portable diagnostics.
