Glasgow Commonwealth Games Cut Seven Sports, Slashing India's Medal Prospects

Commonwealth Games 2026 – Glasgow organizers removed badminton, wrestling, hockey, shooting, weightlifting, squash and gymnastics from the program, citing venue constraints, cutting several Indian medal‑rich disciplines; India, which has already secured 16 medals in early events, now faces a tighter medal race.

Medal Outlook – India captured 20 medals in badminton, 10 in wrestling and five in hockey at the 2022 Games; losing these events could shave roughly 30 percent off its expected medal count for 2026.

Anand Mahindra – The Tata Group chairman praised India’s overall preparation but warned the cuts “hit our athletes hard,” urging the sports ministry to negotiate alternative international tournaments to safeguard athletes’ careers.

Athlete Response – Badminton star P. V. Sindhu and wrestler Bajrang Punia said they are disappointed but will redirect their focus to the Asian Games and Commonwealth Youth Games to keep competitive momentum.
