India Secures $5 Billion Applied Materials Investment Amid Rs 1 Lakh Crore Semiconductor Commitments
Semicon India 2026 event opened with announcements of Rs 1 lakh crore (about $120 billion) in investment commitments from domestic and foreign firms, marking the largest financial pledge for India's chip sector to date.
Applied Materials declared a $5 billion capital infusion to build advanced manufacturing lines in Gujarat, aiming to boost local production of high‑performance wafers and attract further multinational partners to the Indian ecosystem.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the forum to position India as a “trusted semiconductor hub,” citing policy incentives, a ₹1.27 lakh crore Semicon 2.0 scheme and plans to create millions of skilled jobs across the supply chain.
Industry leaders attending the exhibition highlighted the need for stronger R&D funding and domestic design capabilities, warning that without coordinated government‑industry effort the sector could lag behind competing regions such as Taiwan and the United States.
