India’s Semiconductor Mission 2.0 Boosts Domestic Chip Production to 80 Million Units

India’s First Chip Plant: The government has launched the country’s inaugural semiconductor fabrication facility, a 91,000‑square‑meter complex that will produce advanced chips for electronics and automotive sectors. The plant is part of a broader push to reduce import dependence.

Semiconductor Mission 2.0: The cabinet approved a new mission worth 1.27 lakh crore rupees, aiming to boost domestic chip production to 80 million units annually. The plan includes incentives for private firms and research institutes.

Job Creation Forecast: Officials estimate the new plants will create over 100,000 jobs across the supply chain, from design to assembly. The government highlighted the potential to position India as a regional manufacturing hub.

Government Investment: In addition to the mission fund, the Ministry of Electronics has earmarked 4,594 crore rupees for four new fabrication sites, while Japan has pledged 1 lakh crore rupees to support technology transfer and skill development.
