India Prepares Agentic Payments Rollout on UPI to Expand Cashless Access
India is set to introduce agentic payments on its Unified Payments Interface (UPI), according to unnamed sources, marking the next phase of the country’s digital payment expansion and will complement recent innovations highlighted in UPI news coverage.
UPI platform, already handling billions of transactions daily, will allow third‑party agents such as merchants or micro‑entrepreneurs to initiate transfers on behalf of customers lacking bank accounts, widening financial inclusion and reduce reliance on cash in underserved areas.
Sources say the rollout is slated for early next year, with pilot testing in select states and integration into existing UPI apps, while the Reserve Bank of India will issue new operational guidelines. The pilot will involve over 10,000 agents and will be monitored for security compliance.
Industry observers expect the agentic feature to boost transaction volume by enabling cash‑less payments in rural markets, potentially adding millions of new users and supporting government goals for a less‑cash economy. Analysts also note that the feature could attract fintech partnerships seeking access to India’s large user base.
