Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $13 Billion to Keep Platform Open Source

Nvidia disclosed an agreement to acquire Hugging Face for roughly $12.9 billion, a figure reported as $13 billion, representing one of the biggest AI‑related transactions this year and signaling Nvidia’s push to embed leading language models directly into its GPU ecosystem.

Hugging Face will remain an open‑source platform after the purchase, with Nvidia promising to keep the model repository freely accessible, maintain existing licensing terms, and support community contributions without introducing new fees or closed‑source restrictions.

Platform currently hosts more than 2 million AI models, and about 80 percent of all downloads come from the top 50 models, highlighting its central role in powering research, commercial applications, and rapid prototyping across the AI community.

Industry analysts predict the deal will accelerate Nvidia’s cloud AI services, give it deeper integration with open‑source tools, and intensify competition with other AI powerhouses such as OpenAI and Google, potentially reshaping the market for enterprise AI solutions.
