United States Proposes Steep Tariffs On Indian Generic Medicines Threatening Export Growth

United States announced a proposal to levy steep tariffs on generic medicines imported from India, part of a broader push to strengthen domestic drug manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and protect American patients.

Indian Pharmaceutical Exports grew more than 9% this year, according to the Commerce Secretary, underscoring India’s role as a major source of affordable medicines worldwide and highlighting the sector’s momentum before the tariff threat.

Industry Leaders including the chief executive of a top Indian pharma firm warned that the tariffs would push U.S. drug prices higher and could shrink India’s market share, though they argue Indian generics may still compete on cost.

Analysts at the Global Trade Research Institute (GTRI) project that the tariff measures could cut India’s generic export volumes by a sizable margin, potentially reshaping global supply chains and prompting Indian firms to seek new markets.
