Delhi Air Quality Index Hits 300, Prompting School Closures Across National Capital

Delhi air quality index spiked to 300, the highest level recorded since 2019, triggering school closures across the national capital and neighboring Noida and Ghaziabad.

Smog blankets Delhi, with particulate matter levels exceeding 250 µg/m³, forcing residents to wear masks and limiting outdoor activities, according to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

Farm fires are not the sole cause of the winter smog, according to a Centre statement presented to the Rajya Sabha, which highlighted traffic emissions and industrial output as major contributors, the Centre also cited vehicular emissions from Delhi's congested roads and power plant smoke as significant contributors.

Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to such high AQI can increase respiratory hospital admissions by up to 15%, urging citizens to stay indoors and use air purifiers, the Ministry of Health also recommended that vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, stay indoors during peak hours and use HEPA filters.
