Glasgow Commonwealth Games Drop Five Sports From Program Ahead Of 2026 Event

Glasgow Commonwealth Games officials confirmed that hockey, cricket, badminton, wrestling and shooting will not be part of the upcoming event’s competition schedule in Scotland, reducing the total sport count and affecting over 2,000 athletes while altering the traditional Commonwealth Games lineup.

Hockey Federation India expressed disappointment, noting that the exclusion eliminates a key platform for its senior and junior teams to gain international exposure and compete ahead of the next Olympic cycle and the upcoming Asian Games.

Athletes from the omitted sports fear reduced funding and sponsorship opportunities, as performance at the Commonwealth Games often influences government grants and corporate backing in their home countries, creating increased uncertainty for their training programs.

National Sports Bodies are lobbying the Commonwealth Games Federation, requesting a review of the program and suggesting alternative venues or exhibition matches to preserve the sports’ visibility, maintain athlete development pathways, and mitigate potential fan backlash.
