AIIMS Validates First Indian‑Made Stroke Device With Trial Matching International Standards

AIIMS completed a clinical trial of a domestically developed stroke intervention device, reporting that its safety and efficacy matched those of imported alternatives, and was overseen by senior neurologists Dr. Rajesh Kumar and Dr. Anita Singh.

The trial involved multiple patients across AIIMS Delhi, including individuals aged 45 to 78, and recorded clot removal rates and recovery times that were statistically comparable to leading foreign devices, with an average procedure duration of 45 minutes, according to the published findings.

Results demonstrate that the homegrown device can achieve outcomes on par with imported technology, offering a potential cost advantage for Indian hospitals seeking affordable stroke care solutions, as the device costs roughly half of comparable imported models.

Experts said the successful trial could accelerate nationwide adoption, strengthen India’s medical device sector, and reduce reliance on costly imports, marking a milestone in domestic healthcare innovation, with the Ministry of Health pledging support for scaling production across regional medical institutes.
