Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission Faces Implementation Hurdles Eight Years After Launch
Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission aims to create a unified digital health ID for every Indian, linking hospitals, insurers and pharmacies under the larger Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which provides free medical coverage to over 500 million people.
PM Modi marked the scheme’s eighth anniversary by declaring the program is “moving closer to every doorstep,” noting recent expansion of grassroots health centers and increased enrollment of rural families in the digital platform.
State Governments report roadblocks in statewide rollout, citing insufficient broadband, limited training for health workers, and concerns over data privacy that slow adoption of the digital health IDs in remote districts.
Health Analysts warn that while free medical cover has transformed access, the digital mission’s delays risk undermining the scheme’s sustainability, urging faster infrastructure upgrades and clearer privacy safeguards to keep the program effective.
