India Faces 15 Percent Monsoon Rainfall Deficit as El Niño Strengthens

India is projected to receive about 15 percent less rainfall than the long‑term average for the June‑September 2026 monsoon, marking the weakest season since 2009, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, raising concerns for the agricultural sector.

IMD says the El Niño pattern is strengthening, which typically suppresses moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal and raises the risk of dry conditions across central and northern states during the core monsoon months.

September forecast from the department indicates a chance of localized heavy showers in coastal regions, but overall rainfall is expected to remain below normal, keeping the cumulative deficit near the 15 percent mark.
