India Announces Eight New Semiconductor Plants to Boost Self‑Reliant Chip Production

India plans to add up to eight new semiconductor fabrication plants, aiming to expand its manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on imports. The government says the projects will attract foreign and domestic investment and create thousands of skilled jobs, and strengthen supply chains for electronics.

PM Modi highlighted the initiative during Independence Day remarks, calling the chip sector a strategic priority for national security and economic growth, and pledged continued support for research and development.

Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the country already hosts 12 semiconductor units with a combined investment of about $20 billion, and that the upcoming facilities will bring total capacity close to global competitors.

Semiconductor Industry officials expect the new plants, including a ₹2,500 crore Advanced Semiconductor Innovation Platform, to boost exports and position India as a regional hub for AI‑driven hardware.
