Prime Minister Narendra Modi Announces Nationwide Talent Hunt to Boost India’s 2036 Olympic Prospects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide sports talent hunt on Independence Day, aiming to identify 1 million young athletes across schools and clubs to build a pipeline for the 2036 Olympic Games.

Delhi will host international school badminton and wrestling competitions next year, providing a testing ground for the talent hunt and exposing students to high‑level competition under the new sports ministry program.

Sports Ministry officials said the initiative includes $2 billion funding for infrastructure upgrades, coaching scholarships, and regional scouting camps, aiming to raise India’s medal tally from 10 in Tokyo 2020 to at least 30 by 2036.

Analysts note that the talent hunt coincides with the Commonwealth Games 2026 programme cuts, prompting officials to shift focus toward Olympic sports such as badminton, wrestling, and athletics to maximize future medal prospects.
