India Surpasses 500 GW Power Capacity as Solar Leads Renewable Expansion

India has crossed the 500 GW threshold in total power generation capacity, a landmark driven largely by the swift rise of renewable sources, especially solar, as detailed in a recent Press Information Bureau statement.

Renewable Energy capacity now totals 234 GW, with solar installations forming the largest component and adding several gigawatts of new capacity during the latest reporting period, surpassing wind growth and cementing its lead in the clean‑energy mix.

Government officials framed the milestone as a step toward India’s net‑zero by 2070, unveiling a Rs 1.6 trillion grid build‑out plan that will integrate additional renewable power and earmark contracts for firms such as Adani Transmission, Power Grid Corp and Tata Power.

Analysts say the solar surge cuts emissions, strengthens energy security and positions India among the world’s top renewable markets, while also offering cost savings for sectors like steel that can switch to clean power.
