India lost 300 million units of renewable electricity in the first quarter of 2026, according to Ember’s analysis, marking a setback to the nation’s renewable capacity targets and highlighting the impact of transmission bottlenecks and strains the national grid’s ability to integrate new capacity.

Ember attributes the shortfall to transmission bottlenecks that forced curtailment of solar and wind output across several states, including key generation zones in the north and west, leading to estimated revenue losses for developers.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy highlighted the issue in its monthly update, noting that the constraints hinder the country’s energy‑security goals and that the renewable push also reveals heavy reliance on Chinese equipment and calls for faster grid upgrades.

Analysts warn that continued transmission limits, combined with climate‑stress pressures on solar output, could slow India’s renewable progress, increase dependence on imported fuels, and challenge the nation’s climate‑resilience plans and may prompt policy revisions.
